It is a common question right now during the corona virus pandemic, “Why do many people experience mild symptoms – or no symptoms at all?”
Our immune system fights infection, injury and disease – and it does such a good job in fact, we don’t even realize it is being done. A lot of the time we are exposed to this virus, or others and do not experience any symptoms at all.
Elderly people and those with pre-existing conditions are the most common conditions that weaken the immune system, making it less capable of fighting off a viral infection.
Boosting your immune system could benefit not only your risk of fighting off COVID-19 or any other viral infetions, but also your positively impact your overall health and wellness.
Having a healthy diet may eliminate some of the “pre-existing conditions” that are risk factors including obesity and type 2 diabetes. The U.S. consumes too much over processed, fast food, high-carb, high-sugar, nutrient deficient foods that contribute to obesity and type 2 diabetes. Poor food choices can put the body in a state of chronic inflammation increasing complications, whether viral or not.
Making better food choices and replacing some of those empty-calorie foods with whole grains, fruits and vegetables is what we want. An healthier diet is what we strive for. You may still need to add supplements, vitamins and minerals – particularly ones that may boost your immune system. Vitamins C, D and E and other nutrients will help reduce inflammation and/or fighting colds and flu: think curcumin and zinc. The goal is to make sure make you’re getting the correct vitamin amounts and nutrients to make up for what you don’t get from your diet; and not getting too much of any one nutrient that toxicity could be a factor, such as fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K. (Your doctor can tell you more.)
Try reducing stress, it suppresses the immune system, increasing the risk of getting colds, illnesses, etc. High stress could increase the risk of complications from exposure to COVID-19.
Incorporate exercise, it is great for long-term immune health. Research also shows that exercise may initiate short-term immune response, stimulating immune cells to fight potential intruders.
Exercise with heavy breathing may help get rid of pathogens of the lungs and reduce respiratory infections. However, over exercising may suppress immune function as well. Practice moderate exercise and remember to rest in between workouts.
Chiropractic has been shown in many studies to effectively reduce inflammatory markers, relieve stress and reduce pain, also improving quality of life and increasing your potential ability to fight off foreign pathogens.
